With swirling mesenko (one-stringed fiddle), punk krar (six-stringed lyre) solos, wah-wah-violin, bass krar boom, and the unstoppable rhythm of heavy kebero (goat-skin drum) beats, Qwanqwa keeps the people wrapped in celebratory attention. After making a splash at world renowned festivals Roskilde and WOMEX, this world traveling ensemble is hitting the road in 2018 and beyond.QWANQWA draws inspiration from East Africa regions of Ethiopia and beyond. Delving deep into regional beats and moods, the repertoire ranges from a trance-like song of the Eritrean tribe of Blen to a Somalian rock number to Mahmoud Ahmed sing-a-longs. The music is characterized by tight arrangements and extended experimental moments. The live show ranges from intimate to wild, from whispery conversations to full blown rock show, and it is hard to believe these psychedelic sounds are coming from traditional harp and violin. "Ratie D is Zimbabwean singer and song writer who aspires to unify and spread positive vibrations to all who encounter her. Her music is enjoyed by the young and old as she delivers melodies and lyrics that are meant to encourage, celebrate and uplift those in need. Her musical journey started in church, school choirs and finally an opportunity to travel Europe with all female acapella ensemble Nobuntu in 2013. Shortly after she joined Bongolove in 2014 on a US tour backing an African circus for 2years. It was at this point that Ratie D grew as an entertainer and started performing solo pieces on mbira and fronting a band. She has performed at World Beat Festival,Oregon Country Fair, Beloved Festival, Pan African Festival, Black Cultural Festival, Juneteenth Eugene, Juneteenth Medford to name a few. Her debut album, Ink & Melodies is available on all streaming platforms."
