KORNGOLD Much Ado About Nothing: Suite (OMP premiere)
BRAHMS (arr. BERIO) Concerto in F Minor for Clarinet, Op. 120, No. 1 (OMP premiere)
BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 7
OMP opens its ambitious and spirited 36th season with Korngold’s suite from Much Ado About Nothing, whose witty overture has been compared to that of Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro. The orchestra then lithely moves to Berio’s arrangement of Brahms’ free-spirited Sonata in F Minor for Clarinet, with guest soloist and acclaimed clarinetist David Shifrin. Shifrin, Artistic Director of Chamber Music Northwest since 1981, is one of only two wind players to have been awarded the Avery Fisher Prize. The revolutionary harmonic itinerary of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 brings the evening to a close with the musical embodiment of defiance, individualism, humanitarianism, and intolerance of hypocrisy that has long made this work an audience favorite. Long live the genius of an untamed personality!
A pre-concert talk will take place in Room 163 (next to Beall Hall). The talk begins at 6:45pm.
