Presented by The Not Ready for Retirement Players
The Not Ready for Retirement Players are proud to present their third production in The Studio at the Hult, “Funny Money,” by Ray Cooney. The play, directed by Chris Pinto, is a wonderful farce in which the main character, Henry Perkins, has mistakenly picked up the wrong briefcase on the subway. He discovers that instead of his scarf and gloves being in his briefcase, there is a million dollars in British pounds. He immediately goes to a pub to count the money in the men’s bathroom, which makes him late for his birthday party and draws the attention of a police officer who thinks Henry is in the bathroom to solicit men. His wife Jean is frantic, preparing a birthday surprise which includes dinner with their close friends, Vic and Betty Johnson. When Henry doesn’t arrive home at his normal time, Jean starts to drink. The hilarity ensues when Henry comes home and announces they are immediately emigrating to Barcelona, which is a complete surprise to everyone. However, before they can escape, two police officers show up, in addition to the mobster Mr. Big, who is looking for his briefcase.
This non-stop farce is frenetically funny and provides many laughs as Henry ineptly attempts to extricate himself from this impossible position, leading to increasingly hysterical situations. The cast includes well-known Eugene actors Dan Pegoda, Bill Campbell, Paul Rhoden, Scott Machado, Melanie Moser, Chris Pinto, Chris McVay, and newcomer Janna Slack. This cast is sure to delight with their comical flair and superb timing, and this fast-paced whirlwind will not disappoint as it leaves you in stitches.
